Most of the records in the collection pertain to the $400,000 raised by the American Baptist Education Society in 1889-1890 in order to obtain a 600,000 grant from John D. Rockefeller for the creation of an endowment for the University of Chicago. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. Alexander Cumming was from Oil City, Pennsylvania. He attended college at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago. While he was a senior at the University of Michigan in 1893, Cumming was the editor for the Graduation Souvenir, a publication given to graduating students. After his graduation from the University of Michigan in 1894, Cumming became a professor of English and History at Grove City College in Pennsylvania.
